Oracle V SQL Server

I have a person that belongs to a unit, that unit can belong to another unit, and that unit… you get the picture. I needed a SQL query to traverse the units finding the first one with a specific word in its name. Now in Oracle I can use “START WITH” and “CONNECT BY” to traverse this query, very cool. Due to the nature of the application, I also have to support Microsoft SQL Server; so a quick Google search to see how SQL server returned “SQL Server does not support the Oracle START WITH…CONNECT BY clause”, not cool.

Oracle 1 Microsoft 0

I can’t use stored procedures as this means altering the database which isn’t an option. So I’m going to have to do this in code 😦
